Did you know that you can use the Mini-Ductor line along with the Mini-Pad attachment to strip powder coating from metal? We’re digging into this on our blog today!

What is Powder Coating?

According to the Powder Coating Institute’s website, “Powder coating is a high-quality finish found on thousands of products you come in contact with each day. Powder coating protects the roughest, toughest machinery as well as the household items you depend on daily.”

Advantages of Powder Coating

“It provides a more durable finish than liquid paints can offer, while still providing an attractive finish. Powder-coated products are more resistant to diminished coating quality as a result of an impact, moisture, chemicals, ultraviolet light, and other extreme weather conditions. In turn, this reduces the risk of scratches, chipping, abrasions, corrosion, fading, and other wear issues” – Powder Coating Institute website on “What is Powder Coating?”

Why Remove Powder Coating?

Let’s say you have something powder-coated, like vehicles wheels, and you or your customer want to change that color. You can use induction heat to remove the powder coating and the metal is reusable, meaning you can strip the coating and repaint it.powder coating removal result

In addition to that, another great reason to use induction heat is that by preheating metal objects with magnetic heat before painting or coating them, you can remove most impurities that will let the coating or paint adhere better.

Powder Coating Removal with the Mini-Pad

In the video, we are using a powder-coated sample which can work similarly to how this could work in other applications. We used the Mini-Ductor Venom HP and the Mini-Pad attachment.

Instead of heating the sample directly, we put a piece of high-temperature Teflon sheeting between the Mini-Pad and the sample.

And as you can see, it didn’t take long at all for us to scrape it off! And it removed the coating from the other side at the same time.
